New York is now the 6th state to legalize gay marriage! But there are still 39 states specifically banning it.
From what I've seen the main reason anyone opposes gay marriage is due to religious views. What other argument is there against it? The homosexual couples that I know that want to get married love each other just as much if not even more than the straight couples I know wanting to get married.
Homosexuality won't ruin the sanctity of marriage, if anything, it would help it. Its ok for straight people to get married 3, 4, 5 times over but its not alright for a homosexual couple to legally announce their love for one another?
39 states! Wow. Where to you go in America if your a homosexual?
ReplyDeleteIt's progress. Homosexuality was still illegal in 13 states until 2003, when the Supreme Court struck down such laws. Now no one except the most flaming nutters is arguing that it should be illegal, and we're debating gay marriage, a concept practically unimaginable ten or fifteen years ago.
ReplyDeleteAnd, yes, the objections are mostly a matter of religious taboo, combined with cultural inertia, which has resisted every major social advance ("Of course we have to keep women as second-class citizens -- because it's always been that way!"). But the speed with which attitudes have changed is remarkable. Among people under 30, the argument is already pretty much over with.
Its ok to be a homosexual in America, you just can't legally be married and have the same rights as a heterosexual married couple. Some friends of mine that are lesbians were "married" back in December. Here in Florida they aren't legally married like a heterosexual couple would be, even though a certified pastor married them, its a union, not a marriage legally.
ReplyDeleteAnd Infidel753, I appreciate your thoughtful comments on these matters, you make great points and that's why I follow your blog.
ReplyDeleteYes that's what I meant, if your gay looking to spend your life with another person.
